Essential oils and Little ones: Essential Edge

The benefits of essential oils aren’t limited to adults. Essential oils can be wonderful for your whole family- even the youngest members. When it comes to your little ones, though, it’s especially important to use oils in a way that is safe for their sensitive systems. Luckily you don’t have  to dig through a pile of research on your own to find out how! We’ve conducted careful research to develop recommendations for using essential oils with your children, from the tops of their heads to the tips of their toes.

Before you administer oils to your children, consult a health care professional, especially if your child or infant is sick.

General use: Children can be especially sensitive to some essential oils. We recommend  caution when  using the following oils (or blends containing them) with children and infants: Idaho Tansy, Hyssop, Sage, Clary Sage, Wintergreen, Eucalyptus, Oregano,  and other strong oils.

Ingestion: Because Young Living oils are so concentrated we do not recommend ingestion by infants.

Diffusing: Diffusing is a wonderful way to add humidity to the air and surround your little ones with relaxing aroma. When you diffuse oils next to cribs and play areas, add less oil than you usually would to avoid overwhelming sensitive little noses. wearing essential oils on your own skin can also help your baby become familiar with the fragrance.

Topical application: Children’s skin is very delicate, so make sure to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil, grape seep oil, or v-6 vegetable oil complex. We recommend diluting the oils more heavily than you would for your own use. When  you are using a new essential oil, preform a spot test on your child’s arm or leg with heavily diluted oil.If no reaction occurs it is likely okay to use.

Oven Cleaner

Let’s start today with a smile and a lot of hope!

Let’s face it the cold winter months make us all look forward to spring but what some of us don’t look forward to is “spring cleaning”. I think the one thing I don’t like to do and it doesn’t just need to be done when spring arrives, it’s cleaning that awful mess in the oven from all the holiday baking that sometimes goes unchecked or even ignored because of how busy we got.  With the smell of oven cleaners being as stinky as they are you want to open a window while doing it but with the winder winds that isn’t practical.

When we’re swapping out natural ingredients in our cleaning supplies it can take some trial and error to find something that really gets the job done without all the harsh chemicals. Well, this oven cleaner recipe was a big exception. It worked the first time we tried it, and I’m so excited to share it with you!

How this natural oven cleaner works

1. I make a paste with baking soda, water, and three of my favorite essential oils for cleaning: Orange, Pine, and Tea Tree Essential Oils.

2. I smear the thick paste all over the dirty oven and then let it sit for about 5 minutes.

3. Next, I swipe a damp sponge over the surface. I apply gentle pressure, but not a lot of elbow grease. The tiny pieces of the baking soda will do the hard work so if you have a trouble spot it’s better to add more baking soda paste than to add more muscle. Trust me. I started out thinking that I needed to press down really hard to get rid of all the baked on grease. But when I started moving more baking soda over the area, it really did break down the gunk better than I could with more pressure.

4. Finish, by wiping off all the baking soda and cleaning off any of the residue with another damp sponge. You don’t want to leave an y baking soda behind because it will stink when it bakes.

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup baking soda
  • 15 drops Orange Essential Oil
  • 15 drops Pine Essential Oil
  • 10 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • 3 – 5 tablespoons water

Hair Detangler

Let’s start the day with a smile and a lot of hope!

I have a 6 year old daughter that is currently trying to grow her hair out, her hair was very short pixi cut and now it is almost to her shoulders. Our problem seems to be that when she washes her hair and then towel dries it, it becomes a tangled mess. I hate to listen to her cry out from trying to work out the tangles so I took to the internet to find a recipe that we could try. I found one and was so excited that I could incorporate it into her nightly routine. If you have long hair that tangles easily maybe this will help.

ingredients:

1/4 tsp apple cider vinegar
1 TBS Aloe Vera Gel or conditioner
2 drops Orange Essential oil
2 drops Rosemary Essential oil
3 drops Lavender Essential oil
Distilled water

How To:
Fill a 2oz  spray bottle half full with aloe Vera gel. Add Apple Cider Vinegar and Essential Oils, and fill the rest of the bottle with Distilled Water. Shake to combine and spray hair before using a comb or brush.
